One God, Many Names

Everyone needs to read this article (see link below), especially if you're involved in any type of Islamic outreach (a.k.a. da'wah). Based on some inexcusable misconceptions that I've come across, I feel that this is probably the single most important article that Muslims involved in da'wah need to read - and it certainly wouldn't hurt if non-Muslims read it as well. It's a very timely, thoughtful and highly relevant article for Muslims living in an English-speaking country.

One God, Many Names, by Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah

This official description of this Nawawi Foundation paper is as follows:

“This paper addresses the primordial origin of the divine names of God in order to establish the equivalency of the Biblical ‘God’ to Islam’s ‘Allah’ and the need for American Muslims to embrace both. While Muslims affirm that they worship the ‘God of Abraham,’ recently America’s religious right has denied this common ground. This point is aided by English-speaking Muslims’ avoidance of the word ‘God,’ due to an erroneous assumption that ‘Allah’ alone carries legitimacy.”

Salaam,

came across your blog via Muslims under Progress - we seem to be very much alike in our thinking. I've been blogging at Shi'a Pundit and UNMEDIA on Islamic issues for some years, and have been eager to see more moderate, non-knee-jerk-"Progressive" muslims take to the blogsphere. welcome, and I'll definitely be reading.

wassalam

God is what HE is. The creator of the universe has revealed HIS name to man and it is not allah. Just ask Israel and he will tell you the creators name. Allah is the name of the destroyer not the creator. Muslims are slimy cowards who hide behind women and children; sending babies to kill men and themselves. Muslims study satan himself, Jesus said, "the thief comes not but to kill, steal and destroy; but I have come that you may have life and more abundantly". Muslims allah teachs to kill, steal and destroy........so tell me again, one god and many names......no I don't think so! Jehovah and allah are not the same god!

I'd reccommend the CD set "The Attributes of God in Islam" with Shaykh Hamza Yusuf and Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah. Dr. Umar goes over this topic in that "conference" as well as many other topics. You can find it al www.alhambraproductions.com

Please help me understand.

How can God say in the Bible that "This is MY son, in whom I am well pleased!", yet according to the koran, he has been demoted to be merely a prophet?

The Christian God is not schizophrenic. He does not make mistakes, he does not change is mind. He is simply a God of Love, and you cannot do anything to earn his forgiveness. He gives it freely to anyone who asks for it.

In the muslim faith, you have to earn your way to heaven. I wonder, what do you do after the 72nd day???

All this fighting, over a name. Can you not see that this is foolishness. This paper is attempting to make a bridge between islam and christanity. And it is being ridiculed by the very people with whom it is trying to reach. I am sorry but you closed minded christans have some major issues to work out. Good luck in heaven, becuse I don't want to be there with your type.

Hello, I have been reading muslim-answers.org and have been very glad about what I have found. I know that there are always a few people who spoil everything for everyone else, extremists, or people that blog. I DO believe bridges should be forged. I am a Christian, and I have studied a few different faiths, and I have actually been hoping that we could unite in some way. Unfortunately, the future will be difficult because fewer and fewer people believe in God, who is the same God of both religions (http://www.muslim-answers.org/Introducing-Islam/7answers.htm)
I know people worry about heaven, and what will happen exactly when we get their. I think that in the end God will care more about other things, and less about which exact faith and which denomination you came from. Though I do disagree about the Muslim understanding of who Jesus really was, I don't want that to get in the way of my relationships with any of them. As Christians, we should remember that Jesus said the world would know we were his disciples by our love. Not our debate skill, or about our stubbornness of being right, but our love. May you live in the love of God, and spread his light to all the darkness in the world.
