PBS Frontline Profiles Jewish Extremists

Tonight, PBS Frontline aired an interesting documentary entitled Israel's Next War, which focused on Jewish extremist groups in Israel. I'm confident that many viewers were shocked and surprised at what they saw and heard during this informative program—and I hope that it might cause dilemmas to form in the minds of some of these thinking, but heretofore uninformed, people. For one, these extremists seem to be the Jewish embodiment of the militant, self-righteous and narrow-minded literalism that most decent people abhor in various militant Islamic fundamentalist groups and sects. Not only that, but the documentary brought out the internal struggle going on within Israel between secular Jews and religious Jews, which is what the phrase “Israel's Next War” was really getting at. I think they could have done a better job of explaining the actual degree of this divide amongst Jews in Israel, but it was a good documentary nonetheless.

Many people don't realize that Israel, in spite of its nominal Judaism, is a secular state that ignores the requirments of the Torah in almost every respect, which is why many Orthodox Jews condemn the democratic secular government or, in some cases, even the existence of the State of Israel altogether. Far from being a righteous and religious Jewish State as many Evangelical Protestants would have us believe, public morality in Israel is about on a par with Eastern Europe since it's full of nightclubs, strip bars, prostitution and rampant nudity on television. It's these types of things, as well as flaunting the Sabbath as a day of rest (which seemingly should be punished by stoning) and other such religious code violations, that have the Orthodox conservatives in Israel in a sometimes-violent outrage.

This PBS Frontline documentary didn't spend much time trying to explain what Jewish extremists feel should be done to solve the problem of the presence of secular non-observant Jews in Israel, since it largely focused on their views regarding what needs to be done as far as a Final Solution (which is what some secular critics have called it with very intentional irony) to the Palestinian problem. This solution, as the statements of the Jewish extremists made perfectly clear, amounts to driving the Arabs out of Israel or simply killing them. This, it was explained, is what the Torah requires and is what Zionist Jews will need in order to have enough land for their settlements. I found it ironic that the justification used for seizing more Palestinian land, especially when coupled with racist and dehumanizing statements about their Arab enemies, is very similar in ideological tone to Hitler's quest for lebensraum (i.e. "living space") for the German people. Needless to say, there's a lot of irony in all of this.

It was made clear that most, if not all, of the Jewish extremists that this PBS documentary chose to focus on were followers of the late Rabbi Meir Kahane, who was an advocate of forcing all Arabs out of the land of Israel. In conjunction with this, he also waged a campaign to rid Israel of all Christian missionaries and pseudo-Christian cults. This brings out yet another irony, since the Dispensationalist Evangelical Christian who staunchly support Israel will end up having their so-called "Good News" banned from it. Not only that, but many of the Arabs that Rabbi Kahane and other Jewish extremists want to expel from Israel are Arab (Palestinian) Christians. The irony here being that Dispensationalist Christians will only be able to get the "righteous" Israel which they so fervently desire if grave injustices are committed against fellow (albeit Arab) Christians. As I've explained in my Forgotten (Palestinian) Christians posting, a Christian would have to ignore the seemingly obvious point that since Christians (even Arab ones) follow the New Covenant and not the Old, then they as the New Israel” have at least as much right to live in the land of Israel as any Jew—at least according to the New Testament.

Speaking of the Bible, I was relieved that one of the young Jewish extremists who was interviewed for the documentary made it clear that he felt that the revenge attacks which he and his fellow extremists advocate against Palestinians were scripturally justified. He clearly said that the Psalms call for revenge much more often than they call for peace, and one of their prominent rabbis made it clear (although not mentioned on the program) that hatred and vengeance for God's sake can certainly be justified from the Torah. When Muslim extremists speak in such terms and offer Qur'anic references, regardless of how twisted or out of context, the so-called "experts" and talking-heads start wondering out loud whether Islam is inherently violent, often concluding that Islam itself is to blame for militant extremism and terrorism. However, when it comes to Jewish extremists, they are largely portrayed as a small minority of fanatics who have just managed to twist and misinterpret an otherwise peaceful and wholesome religion.

Even though I liked this PBS Frontline episode overall, since I think it provided a lot of information that most people need to be aware of, it certainly had some shortcomings. For one, it seemed to imply that Palestinians started all the violence and that they're the ones who started using terrorist tactics—which simply doesn't match the facts. Likewise, they showed quite a few grisly pictures of Israelis who had been killed and maimed by Palestinian suicide bombers. However, no such heart-wrenching images were shown of Palestinians, including women and children, who have been killed or wounded when Israel jets or tanks intentionally fire into occupied Palestinians homes while carrying out the same type of "collective punishment" operations that Hamas implements by suicide-bombing. Targeting civilians is wrong regardless of who is doing it and how they're delivering the bomb—so condemn it in both cases O Ye Hypocrites! The cold hard facts tell us that each year a lot more Palestinian children (usually about three times more) are violently killed than Israeli children. However, this simply went unsaid on the program and not knowing any better, one might well have concluded quite the opposite.

Now I'd have to watch the entire Israel's Next War program again in order to actually jot down accurate statistics on this, but it seemed that when they were talking about the various deaths, it was exclaimed that Israelis had been "murdered" although Palestinians were merely "killed". They definitely did this at least once, and it's a rather common trend of media coverage of Israeli-Palestinian violence, so keep any eye out for it. One obvious proof of this is that Israel's targeted assassinations of certain Palestinian leaders are called "targeting killings" rather than "targeted murders" even in the mainstream American media, although these assassinations violate both U.S. and international law.

Another thing that was conspicuous in its absence was any discussion about how these Jewish extremists were not tortured by the Israel Security Services (Shabak). While the documentary showed that the Jewish extremists were held in isolation for long periods and heavily interrogated, nothing suggested that they were tortured. However, one would be safe in assuming that if these were Palestinian Islamic extremists, they would have been brutally tortured wholesale (and there's so much information regarding this on the web that there's no need for me to even provide a set of links).

Another convenient oversight was the 1994 massacre of forty-nine Muslim worshippers in Hebron by an extremist Jew. Although the documentary did mention this Hebron massacre in passing, it didn't give any of the gory details. Maybe the number of Palestinians killed over the years compared to the number of Jewish settlers killed would make the numbers rather lopsided and show that Israel has a lot more blood on her hands. Also, the fact that the grave of Baruch Goldstein, the American Jew mass murderer who carried out the Hebron massacre, was turned into a shrine in Israel (which admittedly disgusted most secular Israelis) and was visited regularly by extremist Jews until it was destroyed by the Israeli government in 2000 might have been judged as just too much for American viewers, since it was not mentioned. However, even though they did show a group of Orthodox Jews holding a vigil at the grave of Rabbi Meir Kahane, who was killed by a Muslim extremist, the fact that up until the year 2000, similar vigils were held a the grave of "Jewish terrorist" Baruch Goldstein was conveniently left out.

Anyone wanting to know more about Jewish fundamentalism and extremism in Israel should read Jewish Fundamentalism In Israel, by Israel Shahak, but do so with a grain of salt. Even though most of the book is accurate, Mr. Shahak was a staunch secularist who seemed to have problems with not only Jewish fundamentalism, but religion in general. Due to that, I think it's fair to say that, at least in a few instances, he may have jumped to some hasty conclusions, misinterpreted facts or overstated things just a bit. Other useful studies of Jewish fundamentalism, militancy and political extremism in Israel are For the Land and the Lord: Jewish Fundamentalism in Israel, by Ian Lustick (published in 1988 by the Council on Foreign Relations Press and thus a bit dated); Brother Against Brother: Violence and Extremism in Israeli Politics from Altalena to the Rabin Assassination, by Ehud Sprinzak; and Zealots for Zion: Inside Israel's West Bank Settlement Movement, by Robert I. Friedman.

Not only that, even if they were legitimate, targeted killings are done with rifles, not bombs, which are designed to cause general destruction rather than kill one person. They are not targeted at all. This is another issue nobody mentions in the media.

You rightly point out that fanatical jews in Israel beleive the only solution to their problem is the expulsion of muslims from israel.

Sadly, you didn't have the courage to admit that this is EXACTLY what most Palestinians want for Jews in Israel - to be killed or thrown out.

I guess it would be too much to expect intelligence and balance from a muslim...

Well Mr. Flanstein again demonstrates his bigotry and irrational hatred of Muslims by stating that "it would be too much to expect intelligence and balance from a muslim". Using his logic (and I'm using the word rather loosely here), after viewing the PBS documentary last night I would have concluded that all Jews, or at least all Israelis, are murderous narrow-minded religious fanatics. In all of his posts to this blog, which I continue to accept in spite of their bigotry and hate-mongering, Flanstein has continued to just assume the worst of Muslims and to blame all of them for the criminal actions of a few. However, when it comes to the crimes, excesses and abuses of certain neo-Imperialist nations currently engaged in the Muslim World, then he seemingly puts on his blinders.

Readers should be comforted by the fact that Flanstein's posts are long on claims and assertions, but rather short on facts and supporting evidence. This is a common characteristic of hate-mongers, since their beliefs stem from a potent blend of lack of education and intellectual double-standards--which are often coupled with racist views as well.

Now in regards to the main claim made in his comment above, well it seems that we'll need to see some polling data in order for his claim to carry any weight. Now it's certainly true that many Palestinians want to expel every single Jew from Israel, and it certainly doesn't take any courage to admit this since only hate-mongering bigots are scared of facts, Mr. Flanstein. However, there are significant numbers of Palestinians who are willing to accept the right of Israel to exist as long as some basic Palestinian rights are guaranteed. My guess is that the numbers of Palestinians who adhere to this view is probably well into the majority. This isn't meant to imply that they're really happy with having to give over two-thirds of their homeland away, but they've come to accept the reality of the situation. Similar thinking is present amongst many Isrealis, who although they'd like to take the entire West Bank and Gaza Strip for themselves, realize that it's in the long term interest of both sides to reach a mediated and mutual solution. Based on this, and in the absence of any facts by Mr. Flanstein, it seems that his claims will remain just that.

This having been said, basic logic dictates that since Zionist Jews came in and occupied Palestinian land, they're the ones who should be expected to leave. Judged by any ethical standard (biased pick-and-choose interpretations of the Bible not accepted), they are the illegal occupiers. The fact remains that in spite of every known law of property ownership and human rights, the Zionists have driven people off land and out of their homes who were the lawful title-bearing owners of the property. Their justification for this is the fact that six million European (not Near Eastern) Jews were murdered by the Nazis. As unfortunate as this may be (and it is one of the great crimes of history--carried out in nominally Christian nations), it doesn't give Jews the right to perpetuate crimes against others. Two wrongs don't make a right--it's as simple as that. Far too often and for far too long the Palestinians were faulted for not wanting peace. Well what country in the world ever wanted peace when its lands were stolen? That's certainly not how the U.S., the U.K., Israel or any other country has ever reacted when its territories (legitimate or otherwise) were threatened or occupied. It's analogous to one's house being violently occupied by a bunch of gun-toting home-invaders. When the police show up, the home-invaders say that if the police recognize them as the rightful owners, they'll give a small back bedroom to the current occupants, nobody will get hurt and we'll have peace. Obviously, this would be peace without justice and the legal home-owners would be out of their minds to agree to this. However, they might eventually agree to such terms if negotiations dragged on long enough and they thought they might eventually lose everything, including their lives. I guess one has to be really blinded by bigotry, double-standards or a warped morality to not be able to see this is what's happening in Israel-Palestine.

Even though I don't have much sympathy for the extremists on either side, especially the ones that target non-combatant civilians, I have the courage to admit that Palestinians are certainly justified in demanding a right to return and to get the land back which they used to legally own (and still do). God willing, no amount of pro-Zionist propaganda or loose accusations of anti-Semitism will ever make me abandon this belief. Such basic justice shouldn't be too much to ask, but seemingly it is. Hopefully, both sides will give up on their hateful rhetoric and tap into the very rich traditions of tolerance that are present in Judaism, Christianity and even more so in Islam. This doesn't mean that we all have to come to complete theological and religious agreement, but we should all be able to get along with each other. Personally, based on historical precedent and some rather gloomy predictions of scripture, I doubt this will happen. However, I firmly believe it's my duty to hope that it will and thus strive for promoting what is best and what is just. Do you think you can help contribute to this, Mr. Flanstein?

Salaam 'Alaikum

I also commented to my DH on the non-mention of the Khalil masjid massacre, which is, I think, significant, b/c it set off a new wave of violence and styles of fighting b/t the Palestinian natives and the settlers that hadn't existed prior. They also did not mention that a lot of the fundraising for those weapons comes from right here in the US of A, nor did they interview IDF soldiers, who have not been shy in saying in the Isra'ili media that they are sick of the settlers starting violence by shooting at Palestinians, destroying property, etc. then running back to their settlements or the checkpoints to hide behind IDF soldiers, who are then obligated to defend them. I think that if they were going to call this "the next war," they needed to explore more deeply how the influx of non-religious Russian Jews (and "Jews") has affected the state, and how there has been violence and harassment against secular Isra'ilis by the extreme haredim. Also, if this had been a documentary about the Palestinian militants, there would have been a good 5 to 10 minutes exploring the roles of women in these movements, but there was no such comparison here, which I would have been interested in.

Finally, you mention that prostitution is rampant there. So is the problem of human trafficking -- mostly women, and mostly Eastern Europeans. This is something I've been reading about on my break. Human rights advocates, including those in Isra'il have approached the state and the UN and other bodies to get the problem stopped, to have existing laws enforced, and they aren't... b/c Isra'il, along with Greece, has one of the most corrupt police / trafficker relationships in the world. When the US first started ranking countries based on their record with regards to human trafficking (aka slavery), Isra'il ranked in Tier 3-- the worst, meaning they were taking absolutely no steps to change anything about it. Nothing's changed as far as their legistlation or treatment of "trafficked" human beings, but they were upgraded to Tier 2 when the US law mandating non-humanitarian sanctions against Tier 3 counties went into effect (btw, this is true of all of the worst offenders in human trafficking, including Turkey).

Assalam Alaikum.

Just a few comments. First, even if, for arguments sake, the Palestinians believe that the Jews should be thrown out of Israel, this still cannot be compared with the Jewish desire to kill and drive out the Palestinians from the land. That is because the Palestinians are the indigenous people of Palestine. They did not one day out of the blue appear from no where and occupied someone else’s land. The Jews who presently occupy the region, are outsiders who began appearing in this region during and after WW2. These outsiders, from various parts of Europe, America etc., came to this region with the intent to ethnically cleanse the region in order to forge a country for themselves. We know what happened later, the indigenous people (Palestinians) were driven out, many were killed, and those who stayed behind were oppressed. This oppression continues till this day. Therefore, in my view, while it is understandable why a large number of Palestinians would love to see the Israelis, who are basically aggressive outsiders (Europeans, Americans, Russians), to be driven out from their homeland, the similar desire of the Israelis for the Palestinians makes them worse since they are the ones who started the trouble in the first place. That is to say that it is understandable why I would feel ill towards the person who oppressed me and killed my people for no reason at all. This is a natural human reaction. But the oppressor is the worst villain since he began the injustice and still feels hatred towards a people who did nothing to him in the past.

To another issue, when the latest intifada started, there was a lot of mention in the American press about the killing of Palestinian children. But what amazed me was how the brutal child killer was portrayed as the pacifist victim. How were these killings presented in the American media? Facts were distorted and presented as: evil Palestinians using their children and having them killed. And: Palestinians deliberately using their children, thereby being solely responsible for their deaths. This is the racist, distorted and hideous manner in which the victims were blamed by the American media. I cannot believe how anyone could get away with such racist and ugly attacks upon victims if they were non-Palestinians.

When have the Jewish settlers been blamed by the American media for using their children by putting them in harms way by moving in occupied territories, knowing these are dangerous areas? These settlers are still coming from America and Russia though they have no reason whatsoever to move to these regions.

Finally, I think it is quite unlikely that there will ever be a just settlement between the Palestinians and the Israelis. The continuation of the conflict is only for the benefit of Israel and she obviously has no desire to end it. At most, perhaps a petty little "state" will be given to the Palestinians, though overall control will be maintained by Israel who will freely enter this "state" as and when she desires. The refugees will certainly not be permitted to return to their original homelands due to demographic concerns of the Israelis and I don’t feel that the present leadership of the Palestinians are strong enough to stand besides truth and justice.

If at least the American media was even a little balanced, then perhaps there would have been a recognizable public opinion in America which may have had an influencing power over American foreign policy. But the American people, by large, are the most ignorant people I have ever come across in my life, many of whom sincerely believe that the evil Palestinians one day, for no reason, occupied the peaceful nation of Israel and poor Israel had no choice but to fight back in self defence. So I do not see how we can ever have a just settlement as long as the American government, and their ignorant masses, are involved in this drama.

wassalam

Oh I forgot to make one observation. Br Squires is correct that most Palestinians have come to accept the existence of Israel and have no desire to drive out the Jews. PLO, the largest Palestinian party, has accepted Israel as is so well known. Often when I am watching CNN and especially that despicable FOX news, I see American politicians, senators, congressmen etc., appearing on various shows discussing the conflict constantly repeating the following type of rants: "Palestinians have still not acknowledged the existence of Israel and wish to drive the Israelis to the sea". It is as if this is what they truly desire and wish for the Palestinians to believe and it hurts them to know that in fact the overwhelming majority wishes to live side by side Israel in peace. The later they do not like, because it does not serve their interests.

Israel is engaged in expansion under cover of pretending to be seeking negotations. But all the while the building continues at a furious pace. And they rely upon apologists and zionists in America to keep the American public off guard about what US tax money is helping to support.
