This World Will Not Fulfill You
Yesterday, I visited the Zaytuna Institute website and listened to the latest community advice [2.2 MB MP3 file or streaming Real Audio] by Sidi Hamza Yusuf. In this short talk, the shaykh translates and discusses an awesome aphorism (hikmah) that is very relevant for those trying to attach their heart to Almighty God in this very materialistic modern age:
“If you seek in this world what suffices you,
then know that the least of this world will suffice you,
but if you seek from this world what will fulfill you —
because you are not fulfilled by what suffices you —
then there's nothing in this world that will fulfill you.”
May Allah give us the strength, wisdom and surety of faith to live our lives as if we're giving these wise words their due.

Assalaam-u-alaykum. Thank you for posting the hikma - its a very deep hikma and worth pondering over. If we call it a hikma does that mean that its from the Hikaam of Ibn Ata'Allah Iskandari (may Allah have Mercy on him) or just that its a wisdom from an Islamic source? - if its not from the Hikaam do you know who the author is?
wa 'alaykumu as-salam wa rahmatullah,
As far as I know, the word hikma is used for any aphorism in Arabic, thus it's not specific to Ibn 'Ata'Allah, may Allah have mercy on him, but can be used for any wise saying -- Islamic or otherwise.
As far as the author, on the audio lecture Sidi Hamza Yusuf mentioned that "Abu Hamza said..." before reading the hikmah. However, I don't know who Abu Hamza is...
