Interview with Norman Finkelstein

Below is a link to a recent Islamica Magazine interview with Norman Finkelstein, a "prolific scholar and outstanding teacher", who was recently denied tenure and put on administrative leave by DePaul University after scandalous, and ultimately successful, efforts initiated by Professor Alan Dershowitz not only brought about a grave injustice, but undermined academic freedom as well. As I touched upon in a previous blog posting, reading in detail about the anti-Finkelstein antics of Dershowitz is well worth the time invested. Not only is the fact that Alan Dershowitz got away with bringing Professor Finkelstein down totally outrageous, but the fact that a Harvard Law professor wrote a book that is "a mixture of plagiarism, shoddy research, and poor scholarship" (as Wahajat Ali puts in in the interview) but still manages to keep his job (although possibly not a very stellar reputation) is mind-boggling. Here's the link to the interview:

Information on Dr. Finkelstein's book Beyond Chutzpah: On the Misuse of Anti-Semitism and the Abuse of History, in which he exposes the shoddy scholarship of Alan Dershowitz's book The Case for Israel, can be found here. As always, it's eye-opening to read the 1-star reviews of Finkelstein's book on Amazon.com just to get a taste of the myopic criticism that is normally thrown his way, including all of the banal accusations of anti-Semitism (keeping in mind that Norman Finkelstein is himself Jewish and his parents were survivors of Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust). To fully understand just how misplaced this criticism is, I strongly recommend watching the videos of a lecture given by Dr. Finkelstein entitled Is Criticism of Israel Anti-Semitic?, which can be found here.

For more information related to the Dershowitz-Finkelstein scandal, check out these links ([1], [2], [3]) and well as our previous postings ([1], [2], [3]) related to Norman Finkelstein...as well as this.

Enjoy...

Salaams,

This interview was actually first published by Islamica Magazine. We would really appreciate it if you could refer readers to the piece located in the Online Analysis section on Islamica Magazine's website IslamicaMagazine.com because we hope there are bloggers out there who appreciate how content is not easy to come up with and how easy it is for some websites to liberally "borrow." Our content is our bread-and-butter and allows us to continue to be an independent source for intellectually engaging, but accessible news, analysis and commentary on Muslim world affairs.

As-salamu 'alaykum,

Thanks for letting me know that Islamica Magazine originally published this interview, since I was not aware of that. Due to the information you've provided, I've changed the links on my blog posting and even added an additional one in bold linking to Islamica Magazine.

I certainly sympathize with your statement that content isn't easy to come by, and it's unfortunate that some people have no qualms or scruples about "borrowing" content rather than linking to it...which is what the WWW is supposed to be all about anyway!

I read your fine magazine regularly, by the way. I used to subscribe, but now I generally purchase at my local Barnes & Noble. Keep up the good work!

Wasalam,

Abdurrahman R. Squires

As-Salamu 'Alaykum,

I wanted to let you know that Finkelstein article wasn't liberally "borrowed". The interview was sent by one of our writers to CounterPunch without the knowledge that we have one month republish gags on our pieces both in the magazine and on the web. There was a bit of confusion. This comment is really directed to you only because although I didn't name CounterPunch directly in initial comment, I do want to clear their name with you. But we have been quite frustrated with what little good material we are getting being used by other sites, most notably other Muslim sites that just up whole articles without asking or even clearly attributing who published it first. Thanks again, for changing the attribution. JAK.
