Goodbye Giulliani...And Good Riddance

Tonight, CNN reported that Rudy 9iu11iani, now speaking of his campaign for the presidency in the past tense (thank God!), said: "I'm proud I ran a positive campaign...I ran a campaign that was uplifting." Gee, I must have blinked and missed that part of his campaign propaganda, but I did see one of his official campaign ads, which he endorsed, that called Muslims "A people perverted". The transcript of this advertisement can be found here, straight from the horse's mouth at the (now defunct) JoinRudy2008.com website. A discussion of this misguided ad, entitled Who You Callin' a Pervert?, is also well worth a read.

This, however, wasn't the only part of Rudy's campaign that wasn't "positive" and "uplifting". A couple of weeks ago, John Deady, the co-chair of New Hampshire Veterans for Rudy Giulliani, stated that in regards to "the Muslims", we need to "keep pressing these people until we defeat or chase them back to their caves or in other words get rid of them." As discussed here, when asked whether he stands by this statement, Deady replied: "I am talking about the Muslims in general. I don't subscribe to the principle that there are good Muslims and bad Muslims. They're all Muslims."

I'm sorry, but any presidential candidate who tries to get into office by riding a wave of this type of narrow-minded bigotry doesn't deserve a single vote. America can definitely do better than this...

Wow.

I never thought that Guilliani would ever be elected, but why allow a supporter to say such a thing?

He rode 911 till the wheels fell off, but the reality is that he did everything he did because he HAD TO, no other reason. No hero cookie for doing your job. He did not go above and beyond, I would hope that any mayor would have done the same.

I appreciate the light you've shed on this subject. I too, am glad he is out of the race.

As-Salaamu 'alaikum,

Don't breathe a sigh of relief just yet - there's still the VP candidate to get sorted out, and McCain spoke highly of 9iu11iani.

Wa 'alaykumu as-salam,

Well that's true. Let's just hope that wisdom prevails and McCain chooses someone else to be his VP.

Other than the bigotry mentioned above, the main reason that I don't like 9iu11iani, and feel that as president he would be a foreign relations and public relations disaster for the United States, is that he completely refuses to recognize the principle of "blowback".

Check out this video and transcript of an exchange that Rudy had with Ron Paul during a debate in South Carolina. Notice that Ron Paul never says that the attacks of 9/11 were a proper moral reaction to U.S. policy in the Middle East, but only that they are understandable on a human level (i.e. if you hurt and kill people, eventually they're going to strike back...and this is what the CIA came to refer to as "blowback").

Giulliani seems to think that America operates in some sort of vacuum and no matter what we do, people in the Middle East should just sit back and not just take it, but like it and be thankful for it. Needless to say, no person suffering from these types of ethical handicaps and mental delusions should be elected President of the United States.

Giulliani simplistically confuses looking for a motive of a crime with condoning the crime itself. A police detective who tries to determine the motive at a murder scene where a man just killed his neighbor isn't somehow saying that, for example, shooting your neighbor is the proper reaction when he plays his stereo too loud. Actually, and maybe worst of all, I think Rudy understands this on an intellectual level, but he in saying what he did to Ron Paul he was just finding another way to play his 9/11 card and appeal to the emotions, rather than the intellects, of the audience.

So in the end, 9iu11iani comes across as a slimy politician who really doesn't have much to offer other than playing the 9/11 card...although on that fateful day he didn't do anything extraordinary. He just capitalized on all of the follow-up press coverage...so good riddance.
