Vatican: Islam is "World's Largest Religion"
I just saw this a few minutes ago:
Muslims More Numerous Than CatholicsThe article stated that the Vatican newspaper admitted on Sunday that "Islam has surpassed Roman Catholicism as the world's largest religion."
Vatican: Islam Surpasses Roman Catholicism As World's Largest Religion
This should come as no surprise to believing Muslims, since the Qur'an says (9:33, 48:29 and 61:9): "It is He (i.e. Almighty God) Who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth (i.e. Islam), to make it manifestly superior over all (other) religions even though the polytheists detest it."
Deen on...

Did the Vatican really define Catholicism as a religion in its announcement? I always thought it was a branch of Christianity. In which case, we're still a distant second: Christians as a whole, including Orthodox and Protestant groups as well as Catholics, made up 33% of the world's population. Muslims are just 17.4%.
Well it depends how you look at it. Yes, Roman Catholicism is just one branch of Christianity...albeit the biggest one. So if you compare this sect of Christianity with the largest sect of Islam (i.e. the Ahl al-Sunnah), then maybe we are the largest religious sect in the world.
However, I think the Vatican might be counting all "Muslims", including Sunni, Shi'a and even some un-Islamic sects such as the Qadianis, in their totals...so maybe this announcement is a bit premature. Indeed, this might just be another Islamophobic ploy to try to scare Europe's lapsed Catholics into going back to mass.
Prior to this, I heard that Muslims were expected to outnumber Christians by around 2012. Allahu 'alim.
Insha'Allah Ahlus sunnah will continue growing.
Thanks for sharing this article. It's sad to read some of those comments, but it is nothing new.
The Vatican is also claiming that this is the 'first time ever' Muslims have supposedly outnumbered Catholics. I'm waiting to see what the academic listservs say about this, insha Allah. Prior to European colonialism, Catholicism was limited to Western Europe, whereas Islam has long had a cross-continental reach. That's before we start on the problem of counting the various regional global population figures in the past (never mind their religions). It wouldn't suprise me to see the certainty of the 'ever' claim challenged.
I pray to God, that someday, muslims are not only becoming the largest religious group in the planet but also the most productive in contributing for the world advancements.
I like the last commen. 'I pray to God..' Amen!
I think we should also recognize that the Vatican was sending a warning about the growth of Muslims and Islam.
It is in keeping with the Pope's showcasing of a former Muslim man to Islam.
In these contexts the Vatican is hardly different than much of the other scaremongering that is going on inside of the western state.
Salaam,
ridwan
